* I don't taste 'rubber' from these.
* I do think the other points are fairly valid.
However, I still think these are really cool. Granted, they are not firm (no silicon is) so you have to hold them carefully after filling and put them on a flat surface in the freezer. Granted, silicon is not a slippery surface, so you can't push-slide them anywhere. Granted, they hold the cubes pretty well, so I twist it a couple times then tend to use my finger to push up on the bottom of the cubes I want to come out.
But on the other hand,
* They fit more ice cubes into a smaller space in my freezer.
* They are a better shape IMO.
* Unlike normal trays, they don't dump a dozen ice cubes everywhere when I just want a few out for a drink. I can push out what I want and put the tray back. So I consider this 'a feature not a bug'.
Now, if you have a need to very quickly use many trays of ice, so you need to be able to grab something, twist, get a shower of cubes, and move on, then this is NOT the ice cube tray for you.
But if you often use only some of the tray, and if freezer space is a premium, and if your fingers to push up on the bottom of a cube or pull it out are not crippled, then I think this is a great ice cube tray.
I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because some of the points people made are valid. It's simply that some of them are not any problem with the product, they are merely a factor of what the product inherently is, e.g., that it is not firm, that it will not 'slide', that all the cubes don't just fall out with a twist -- these are issues of silicon (or the literal cube shape rather than slightly slanted sides), which means it's a 'given' for the product, not a fault, just personal preference about this "kind" of product/feature.
If you want the cube shape, you get the "they don't all fall out at once". If you want the silicon, you get the "doesn't slide" and "isn't rigid". If you don't want those features, well don't buy this ice cube tray, and you'd have no complaints. I actually wanted them, so I think it's a good product.

(More customer reviews)Like another reviewer, I was happy to see a compressor machine available for a reasonable price. I'd owned a smaller machine with a bowl that was placed in the freezer, but the ice cream wasn't as creamy as I wanted and the results varied dramatically from batch to batch.
Armed with a gift certificate (plus quite a bit more), I ordered this machine. For the fourth of July, I made 3 flavors for a party (vanilla, chocolate, & stawberry--I went with the basics), making the bases for each the night before. The next morning, I froze all three ice creams in less than two hours. With a compressor machine, it's easy to make multiple batches one after the other. And the ice cream was a hit at the party, too.
Some tips:
1. The first batch I made was a simple recipe from the instructions which contained no eggs. While it turned out OK, it couldn't compare with custard-based ice creams that include egg yolks. The custard bases consistently result in smoother, creamier, and richer ice cream.
2. Try to make the ice cream base the night before you'll be freezing it (especially custard bases). It allows the flavors to blend and ensures the base is cold. A cold base will freeze more rapidly and is less likely to develop ice crystals.
3. When making chocolate ice cream, using quality chocolate rather than cocoa gives a richer flavor.
4. It's much easier to make ice cream when there's no need to have lots of ice and rock salt or remember to pre-freeze bowl wich may or may not fit in the freezer.
5. It also can freeze sorbets and sherberts and make slushies for the kids. I suppose you could make frozen drinks with it, but I'll stick to the blender for those.
I'm very happy with it so far. It seems well made, produces great ice cream, and has a larger capacity than many other compressor units. While I expect to usually make a half-batch at a time, the 1 1/2 quart capacity plus the ability to quickly freeze multiple batches is great for those times when you need lots of ice cream.

Magic Chef Icemaker Stainless Steel MCIM30SST Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this portable ice maker for myself. In the box, it was large, heavy and cumbersome. I got it out of the box and managed to heft it onto the countertop, next to my sink. You have to wait four hours before you can use it so the refrigerant can settle. During that time, I washed the basket, scoop, and inside of the unit with warm and mildly soapy water. I suggest letting the unit stay open during the four hours to help the plastic odor dissipate. After four hours had passed, I filled up the water tank up to the bottom of the plastic basket. (You put the water in the front portion, underneath the removable ice basket.) I plugged in the machine and the "add water" light came on. Whaaa??? I pushed start and the machine attempted to begin but shut itself off because of the "add water" light. I added more water so it was slightly higher than the bottom of the basket and added some to the top where the icemaker mechanism was and then I pressed start again. I was happy to see the machine stayed on and within 7 minutes I had medium sized ice cubes. The medium cubes are slightly over 1 inch long with a hole in the middle. A gallon of water made enough ice cubes to fill three gallon sized zippable freezer bags. The unit stopped making ice when the water level dropped too low. At that point I turned it off and drained it because I had enough ice to last me for the week. Do the first batches of ice taste "plasticky"? I think they do, but they can be thrown away.

(More customer reviews)We have purchased several snow cone machines over the years and this is my favorite!!! Each Spring, I make snow cones for 4 classrooms full of children (over 100 children). Using the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Maker, this has been our best year! Also, we often will do snowcones out in the driveway after school and we'll have a dozen or so kids stop by.
I purchased two of these machines and had them running side by side in the classroom. I was able to make snow cones for 25-30 kids in 20 minutes. I love the cup/bowl that catches the ice. If you have leftover ice or want to make ahead, you can throw this bowl in the freezer to use the shaved ice later. Also the easy on/off on this machine is nice. If you put in ice that is the right size (some store bought ice is too big), then there shouldn't be too much trouble with jamming. Once or twice I had to arrange the ice because a larger piece was stuck. I LOVE that most of this machine goes straight into the dishwasher! Also, seems very safe to me. The kindergarten class was running both machines and had no trouble!

Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker Review

(More customer reviews)As this product had not been reviewed yet, I read several reviews for the Cuisinart ICE-20 Ice Cream Maker before making my decision to purchase this product. Many comments about the ICE-20 mentioned that the ice cream is the consistency of soft serve; some reviewers said it was too soft. I did not find that issue with the ice cream I made with this ice cream maker. I turned my freezer to the coldest setting and froze the bowl for 7 hours. I could not hear any liquid moving in the bowl at that point, so I assumed it was solidly frozen. I made the Simple Vanilla Ice Cream recipe from the booklet that came with the machine. After about 20 minutes, the ice cream was nicely textured and creamy. It wasn't as hard as the packed ice cream you purchase at the store, so I guess you might say the consistency was somewhere between soft serve and store-bought: firmer than soft serve, but not as firm as hard pack. As reviewers of the ICE-20 pointed out, if the ice cream was frozen as solidly as hard pack in the machine, it would be difficult to remove it from the container.
The ice cream is simply wonderful. It has a fresh, pure taste that outshines anything I could purchase from the store. I bought it mainly because I wanted to have control of my ingredients. I want to use organic products as much as possible and I want to experiment with soy ice creams; I have thought I might want to get away from dairy products altogether.
This product was listed as the newest version of the ICE-20 and as an upgrade that improves upon the ICE-20 while still keeping its popular features. I don't know what the upgrade consists of, but I can say that in 20-25 minutes, I had really excellent ice cream that I thought was the perfect consistency. (Since I posted this review, a commenter here has noted that the upgrade consists of a new paddle design, reducing the processing time by 25%, according to the manufacturer.) After freezing it for a couple of hours it was firmer and I liked it at that consistency, too. I was thinking about how great this ice cream would be with warm apple pie, because tasting it really is like tasting fresh vanilla cream. But we're a couple of months away from apple pie season! This product couldn't be simpler to use, and I think it will pay for itself fairly quickly in savings over the cost of premium purchased ice cream. And it just tastes better.

I was hoping that this unit would crush ice further to make more of a slushie ice. To my wife's delight, this unit crushes ice to a fairly uniform 1/4" and under piece size, perfect for crunching. The ice chunks end up soft and easy on the teeth, and, like a slushie, hold onto soda or juice for flavor. The unit is used two to three times a day and seems pretty rugged.

(More customer reviews)If you buy this part, make sure you give it 24 hours to work. I was expecting it to start working right away as soon as I installed it. I was very frustrated when I didn't see the dial start to spin when installed. I actually took the part out and sent it back thinking it was defective. Well it turns out the part has an internal thermostat that has to get cold to the right temperature in order to kick the icemaker on. They failed to leave out this very important bit of information. The common lay person would never know this. So don't send it back, give it 24hrs to work!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this after much debate about whether or not I needed a two quart ice cream maker or just go with the original Cuisinart $49.95 one. I am so glad i bought this one. It is so great. Easy to use, makes alot of ice cream,so sleek looking.
I have a tiny kicthen and everytime I turn around I am buying something that will clutter my counterspace, but I have to say this I don't mind. It is square, not to bulky and the cord fits nicely up inside the machine. It doesn't dangle or anything. It's right next to my KitchenAid.
I have made two recipes out of the manual that comes with the machine. I usually don't like "manual recipes" however, these are fantastic. The Mango Gelato was a huge hit with family and friends. One girl who doesn't like ice cream, liked it. The simple ice creams that dont require making a custard, you just mix all the ingredients together and freeze, I was thinking it would be terrible. It wasn't, so you can make ice cream in 30minutes from start to finish with those recipes.
I do keep the bowl in the freezer like others suggested with the smaller ice cream maker. It has been very useful to have it already frozen when I am ready to make ice cream.
As far as noise, it is not as quiet as I thought, but don't let that scare you. It's not like turning on a blender and leaving it running for 25 minutes. It's not an annoying noise. Not like the old ice cream makers with the ice and stuff. It is fun to watch it churn too. So the noise just fades to the background.
It's very interactive and a great thing to do with kids and company.
I really can't say enough good. One of the best appliance investments I have mad yet.

(More customer reviews)OK, the Danby Ice N Easy makes ice as quickly as it advertises and you don't need a drain. However there are several things that you might want to know before buying one of these babies...
1. The ice tastes like plastic - I tried vinegar, baking soda and flushing the icemaker with gallons of water, but no joy.
2. The ice melts very quickly - it's not hard ice like you get from an icemaker that lives in your freezer. This has a nasty problem of then making your drink taste like plastic as well.
3. It frequently runs into problems like ice cubes getting lodged in places they shouldn't be, which automatically shut off the system until you attend to it - which means, it stops making ice.
4. When the bin gets full, the unit stops making ice. OK, this makes sense. However, there is no freezer unit in the icemaker, so the ice melts. If you don't need ice for several hours, then all you will have is a melted ice blob because the unit doesn't seem to sense when the ice has melted enough to start making more.
So, unless you enjoy watered down plastic tasting drinks as well as attending to the icemaker on an hourly basis to make sure that everything is still working, I would recommend against this machine and others like it. You just can't get good ice without a freezer component. Maybe this thing is good for boaters that just don't have any other options, but for the home I really wouldn't put up with it.

(More customer reviews)Bought this at Target a few weeks back after I noticed it was on sale for 109.00. Been wanting one for a long time, but didnt really want to spend 200+ on one. So far so good, Small, pumps out ice quickly, we use Ice in everything we drink, so it keeps right up with us. I would have given this 5 stars but the only issue I have with this, is that its very noisy. When the tray lifts up to drop the ice into the basket the elevation noise is quite loud. but have gotten used to it I think :0.. Friends of ours have several different brands of these ranging in high and low pricing, and for the money, they are all the same.. I would recommend this product without a doubt.
