Zak Designs Ice Cream Tub, Pint Size Review

Zak Designs Ice Cream Tub, Pint Size

Since the other reviewer had an unfortunate mishap and couldn't tell about the actual product in use, I will for once write a review. I bought this tub to store homemade ice cream and it has served the purpose well. The seal on the top seems to be quite tight and I have had much less of a problem with ice forming in the cream since using these. My only complaint is that the lid can be difficult to get off right after the container leaves the freezer...but within a few minutes it thaws enough to remove easily.

Keep warm-weather treats chilled to creamy perfection with this stylish and snazzy pint-sized ice-cream container. Made of durable, stain-resistant polypropylene and HDPE (high-density polyethylene plastic), the unit's foam-core-insulated design keeps contents chilled for up to 90 minutes, while its freezable gel lid acts as a built-in ice pack (store in the freezer when not in use). To use, simply remove the lid from the freezer, fill the container with homemade ice cream, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbet, fruit, or cold salad, secure the lid tightly to the base, and conveniently transport to picnics, tailgating parties, the beach, and other sunny destinations. Or, carry it along on shopping trips to keep a pint of ice cream cold and drip-free from the grocery store through additional errands and all the way home to the freezer. Not recommended for microwave use, the dishwasher-safe unit enables fast and efficient cleanup, while its lead-, BPA-, PVC-, and phthalate-free construction ensures safety and peace of mind. Topped by a whimsical spoon imprint, the ice-cream container measures 5 by 5 by 5-1/2 inches.

Cuisinart ICE-45 Ice Cream Maker, Soft Serve Mix-it-In Review

Cuisinart ICE-45 Ice Cream Maker, Soft Serve Mix-it-In
Average Reviews:

This didn't produce ice cream like we expected, but now are pleased with it.It is more of a novelty and nothing you would use to produce serious ice cream. That said, our grandkids enjoy it and we are pleased with it.
The two things you need to do to make it work well are freeze the bowl well and be sure ingredients are cold.
We keep our bowl in the freezer so it's always frozen solid and ready. If you only fill the bowl and inch below the top of the beater, it won't expand over the top when it freezes. Also, be sure the handle is up (closed) all the way when you start or after dispensing or you'll have a mess. The side dispensers didn't work well for us, but I didn't care for them anyway. It works well for us and usually takes about 20-30 minutes. It takes a bit of learning to get the ice cream to come out right, but we mostly just dispense it in cups.
We've never had ours stop turning, even though the ice cream gets too thick to dispense. We just take the beater out and dip it out with a spoon.
The beater has hard areas to scrape the ice cream off of because of the shape. There are two outside stir arms and and inside screw that make up the beater.
I found it was fairly simple to clean.
Overall, if you are interested in fancy swirl ice cream cones, this probably may not be your machine. However, if you just want to make soft ice cream it works fine.

Lello 4090 Gelato Pro Quart Ice Cream Maker Review

I have been making ice cream in a Cuisinart macine for years but I wanted to regain my freezer space from the 2 canisters I had to keep ready.. I also wanted to make good gelato since I can't go to Italy all the time. This machine delivers the real experience for both. It also can chill wine in just a few minutes. I had first bought the Lussino 4080 by Musso at about twice the price. It was terrible. Too soft right out of the machine and full of ice crystals when put in the freezer for any amount of time. It didn't get firm, it became a rock. I returned it and got the Lello Gelato Pro instead. It is quieter, has a washable bowl, weighs much less and makes a larger amount of ice cream. It's no contest. This machine is great

Classic™ Electric / Crank Ice Cream Maker Review

Classicâ„¢ Electric / Crank Ice Cream Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife bought this to replace a 1950's model hand-crank machine that we have been using about 5 or 6 times a year since we met, which was 13 years ago. It was given to me and I don't know how much it was used before that but I suspect quite a lot. The tub is made out of fiberglass, the cylinder stainless steel, the crank from steel and a rugged alloy of aluminum. The dash is made of wood and aluminum. We always make the same ice cream each time, mint chocolate chip. It always turns out very well. But it is showing some wear now, as you would expect a 60 year old machine to, even though we used it 4th of July this year (2009) and it worked just fine. We got this one because it had the hand-crank option, and the key as far as I'm concerned to making good ice cream is the option to crank it until it almost can't crank anymore. Lets be real, it isn't less expensive to make your own ice cream (like the description on this machine says); it costs between 15 and 20 dollars to make a modest batch (salt, ice, condensed milk, milk, cream, mint extract, bakers semi-sweet chocolate, food coloring, etc) and don't forget the effort involved. So you want it to turn out right. Anyway, this one came in the mail, so I got it going. I thought I would start it off with the electric motor and when it got bogged down way too soon (like the electric ones always do) I would switch to hand cranking. After 15 minutes the motor was smoking so feeling pity I unplugged it and mercifully attached the hand crank unit. Within 30 seconds the plastic gears were starting to strip and there was no more turning. Very disappointing. If you like ice cream that is basically just cream on the verge of freezing, I guess you will think this unit is good enough; but compared to what I've been using it is just another piece of mass-produced Chinese junk that makes me lament for the quality craftsmanship that used to be available in the U.S. (and made in the U.S.) at a reasonable price. This unit cost $79 dollars and I felt a bit hollow about spending that money on such an obviously cheap machine. Well I guess I sound like an old crank (haha), but I'm a relatively young person who happens to know a little about quality manufacturing. So, I guess I'm going to find some kind of replacement for the rusted hold-down bolts on the old hand-crank unit and keep going with that.

Bodum Bean Ice French Press 1-1/2 Litre Iced Coffeemaker, 51-Ounce Review

Bodum Bean Ice French Press 1-1/2 Litre Iced Coffeemaker, 51-Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this to make cold brew coffee concentrate and it works perfectly and easily. It is also great for large batches of hot brew too.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
COLD BREW:
1. Add 12 scoops medium course grounds (scoop included)
2. Fill beaker with filtered water, leaving 1/2 inch room at the top
3. Stir grounds into water for about 45 seconds to saturate all the coffee
4. Place the bonus lid on french press and put in refrigerator for 12-24 hours depending on strength desired**
5. Once steeped for hours desired, remove lid and put filter lid on and press grounds to bottom of beaker
6. Mix coffee concentrate with water, either 1 parts concentrate to 2 parts water, or up to half concentrate and half H2O
I use 1/2 coffee concentrate, 1/2 milk over ice because I like it strong. My hubby prefers hot black coffee made with the concentrate and uses the half concentrate and half H2O ratio, then heats it in the microwave. We notice a definite absence of acid, which my husband prefers for taste reasons and I like because of taste and health reasons. When I am under stress, I have to take acid reduction pills for my stomach, being able to drink cold brew when under the gun has given me back my beloved cup of coffee without the stomach cramps.
TIP: Always use filtered water for cold brew since you will taste any and all funky flavors in your tap water. The water for cold brew doesn't get boiled so these flavors, which may disappear with boiling for hot coffee, are very present with cold brew.
**If you have the overhead clearance in your fridge, you can put the filter lid on and press it down about an inch to keep all the grounds under the waterline. The top knob will stick up about 8 inches, so be careful not to hit the lightbulb in the ceiling of your fridge. I have noticed a small difference in flavor, it comes out a bit richer/darker than if I use the bonus lid.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOT BREW:
1. Add 12 scoops medium course grounds (scoop included)
2. Fill beaker with water that is just under boiling hot, leaving 1/2 inch room at the top
3. Stir grounds into water for about 15 seconds to saturate all the coffee (saturation is quicker in hot water)
4. Place filter lid on beaker, but don't press down until coffee has steeped for 4 minutes
This massive french press makes enough hot coffee to fill a carafe to the top and have a whole large mug of coffee left to pour. This worked great for a large party we had this past weekend, because I only have to make one pot of coffee instead of two like I did with our 8 cup Chambord press.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
10 OTHER PROS:
1. It is nice that this one appliance does two jobs perfectly, it cuts down on the amount of kitchen clutter
2. No filters to buy
3. It cleans VERY easily and quickly
4. If you follow the directions, it is foolproof
5. It is sturdy and feels very well made even though the casing is plastic
6. Looks great, I leave ours out on the counter
7. It has a rubber seal and a thumb pressure pour spout, so coffee doesn't spill out if jostled in the fridge
8. 50 oz. of concentrate will last us all work week, so I only have to fill it on Sunday - speedy mornings!
9. There are no small screws or bits to lose, everything dismantles quickly with just a turn of the filter base
10.The handle is well designed, keeping your knuckles away from the glass if you are making hot coffee
Final tip: To get the top off when you first take it out of the box, twist the top a half inch and then pull the press screen out to remove the lid. There is a twist latch in this lid that my other Bodum french press does not have, and the instructions for using this press are folded up INSIDE the closed coffee press, LOL. Thought I'd pass on this bit of advice for those used to their Chambord press :)
UPDATE: After using this product constantly for almost 3 months, I have to say it is one of the all-time best things in my kitchen. I don't have to take as much acid-reduction medication as I did while drinking hot brew. The system is so streamlined for cold-brew concentrate that I don't even have to think about it. My hubby cannot believe how delicious cold-brew concentrate is heated up every morning, he says it is the smoothest way to brew coffee that he has ever had. I still highly recommend this product and will be purchasing more for gifts.

The Bodum Bean Ice gives you the best way to make iced coffee with a French press-and it's remarkably simple, as well. First you put the ground coffee in the jug as usual. Then, you add cold water and put the jug in the fridge overnight. In the morning you press down the plunger-et voila-you have the most smooth tasting ice coffee you can imagine. It had been years since I've had homemade ice cream...this ball has allowed me to enjoy it once again (without much work) and I am so grateful! If you follow the directions, it is super easy to make ice cream. Last night alone, I made two batches. Since I am a vegan, I used non-dairy creamer for one batch and unsweetened almond milk for the second batch. Both worked!
I definitely recommend this product. It should come with a warning label though that states you might gain weight after using it. ;)

Takeya 66-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle, Avocado/Olive Review

Takeya 66-Ounce Iced Tea Maker with Silicone Handle, Avocado/Olive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm so glad I found this tea brewer. I had the Bodum Ceylon brewer for about a year and I would imagine that it's one of the main alternatives to the Takeya.
I'll do a quick comparison:
Durability - honestly, i've only had it for about a month but it's obviously made of better quality, or at least, more durable material. i'm not overly concerned about it breaking. the bodum ceylon i had cracked after using it for about a year and with relatively light usage - as in not every day or even every week of the year. time will tell, but i don't think this is gonna break so easily. the quality feels better in the hand. doesn't feel cheap. Infuser/Filtering ability - the holes on the bodum are large and so smallish leaf or the "dust" gets through quite easily into the brewed tea. the filter on the takeya is very fine and so far i've had clear cups of iced tea. i've been making white tea which has a larger leaf though. i'm thinking that it would do okay with japanese teas which tend have a very fine, almost ground up, leaf. i think takeya is a japanese brand so i would imagine they'd make a brewer that would do a reasonable job on their teas.
the infuser on the bodum though extends the length of the pitcher and so you don't need to fill it up. you would need to fill up the takeya to at least where the tea leaves are in the filter in order to make the tea. you may not want that much and you don't have the option of choosing.Looks - the bodum was nice to look at but the material easily took on a cloudy, not so new looking appearance. it looked old after the first usage. i like the takeya - i like green top since that's my fave color. this particular takeya model is tall so you should take measurements in your fridge to make sure it'll fit wherever you plan to put it. the bodum model is slender which is nice. it slides in easily to narrow areas.Ease of use - the takeya filter/infuser twists into the top/lid. that's very cool. it's very easy. the bodum slides into grooves/tracks on the side of the pitcher. you just have to make sure you get into the grooves; they are easily missed. you also flip this thing at the handle to open the top. the air can also easily access the tea because it's not really closed off. the takeya has a twist open top that will allow you to pour, without excess spillage. and tea stays fresher.BPA - if you care, takeya says it is bpa free. i don't know about bodum. it's not on the description.so, obviously i prefer this one. it's a nice product. i'm looking forward to making more iced tea. i use the cold (no heat) brewing method by the way.

Able to hold up to 66 ounces (8 cups), the Takeya Iced Tea Maker is great for brewing hot or cold tea, or for sun brewing. Margaritaville DM0500 Bahamas 36-Ounce Frozen-Concoction Maker Review

Margaritaville DM0500 Bahamas 36-Ounce Frozen-Concoction Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up the DM0500 model after some extensive shopping around for one of the Margaritaville blenders. This one doesn't hold as much ice as the others but it holds enough for one pitcher worth of drinks. It also doesn't have the fancy buttons that the others have that denote "mudslide," "daiquiri," or "Margarita"(I've heard there is little difference in these settings).
That is the main difference between this model and the others. It had the standard shave only/ blend only switch and a start button( more on that later).
The blender itself is very nice it has some great artistic accents like behind the pitcher on the machine is a metal engraving of a palm tree and a sea plane. The construction is easy and it works right out of the box. All you have to do is attach the ice hopper and you're finished.
Some of the negatives though are that the metal ice chute (that's what I call it) shifts up and down so that it fits perfectly and tightly to the pitcher which is nice except that it doesn't seem like it is extremely sturdy but it hasn't broken yet so I guess I should report that if it does.
The Start button is nice it makes a drink about the consistancy of a smoothie from smoothie king. I enjoyed it alot. The ice hopper shreds ice like a dream and the seal on the top if fantastic. I noticed some people complaining that it spilled and I have had no such problem.
I would highly recommend this model over the others for it's reasonable price and great offerings.

Kick start any party by serving up restaurant-quality frozen concoctions with this unique, easy-to-use appliance. Far more than just an ordinary blender, the unit automatically shaves ice and blends up to 36 ounces of a favorite frosty drink, all at the touch of a button. Simply fill the top reservoir with ice and pour the ingredients into the glass jar. The machine utilizes two motors, one for shaving (not crushing) the ice and the second motor for blending the drinks. Shaved ice ensures better drink consistency--no more chunks or watery drinks. The blender's automatic shave n' blend cycle automatically makes a perfect 36-ounce batch of frozen margaritas.
For party guests who like thicker or thinner drinks, the manual "shave only / blend only" toggle switch allows for easily customizing beverages by adding more shaved ice or blending a little bit longer. The ice reservoir holds enough ice to make one full pitcher of margaritas in one automatic cycle, while melting ice is channeled into a rear reservoir to avoid watered-down drinks. The blending jar and its components clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher, and the rest of the unit quickly wipes clean. Accessories include a Margaritaville shot glass, a quick start guide, a frozen-drink recipe guide, an instruction manual, and four drink coasters in a tin salt tray. The tropical color, nautical design elements, and chrome accents make the appliance the perfect party enhancer. The 450-watt frozen concoction maker measures approximately 14-2/5 by 8-2/7 by 18 inches.

Nu-Calgon Nickel Safe Ice Machine Cleaner Review

Nu-Calgon Nickel Safe Ice Machine Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Kitchenaid Ice Machine had been doing some crazy things lately as well as making some horrible noise. After troubleshooting on the internet, there were a few suggestions that it possibly needed a good cleaning. I ordered the Nu-Calgon cleaner on a Thursday and selected 1 day shipping as I knew I would have time on the weekend to do this. When the product didn't show up on the Friday, I tracked my order and low and behold found that it had been held in Memphis and was un-shippable because it had been damaged. I called Amazon.com customer service on Sunday and my pleasant customer rep arranged for a new shipment which I promptly received on Tuesday morning!
Reading the instructions on the bottle were a little confusing and I started to get concerned that this product was not made for Kitchenaid products. So I checked the owners manual on my particular machine and instead of using 3oz's per gallon of water, it was stated to use the entire 16oz bottle.([...] - see cleaning section) Product worked like a charm...no residue or odor and the ice is now again crystal clear. The machine is as quiet as it's ever been and the ice production is amazing. I did get some of the product on my hand when I was pouring it in but rinsed it off promptly and did not find it to be irritating or corrosive.
I need to order another bottle to have on hand for the next time the machine act's up! I was extremely pleased with it's performance and would highly recommend it as well as Amazon.com service!

I purchased these for my kids to have their frozen fruit and yogurt this summer. They love the fun shapes and enjoy helping Dad scoop the chopped up fruit and vanilla yogurt into the molds. The molds remove easily and wash up quickly, with no foul smells remaining or staining. They aren't too big either, so there isn't any half-eaten pops being tossed in the trash. These are a great buy and worth every penny-we now have 3 different styles in our kitchen.

This machine is everything we needed. After several cheaper models from Walmart and reading many reivews finally decided on this one mainly because it looks heavy duty. When I opened up the package screws were lying in the bottom of the box and misssing from the unit. I thought another piece of chinese junk. The screws would not go back in, the holes werent even close to lining up. Like they just stuck them in the box so they would be there. Anyway there were enough in place to work and just in time for my sons 6th birthday. We have used it many times in the last several weeks and makes great snow cones and plenty of them. The main drawback was the very high shipping cost, but we are very happy with it so far.

This makes good iced tea, but the design leaves a lot to be desired. The handle is at the top, so when full I need two hands to lift it - not balanced well at all. Also, the diffuser is not anchored in any way, so it floats around the pitcher when you are filling with water. Oh, and the worst, most annoying part is that the top won't stay open. The slightest touch makes it slam shut. Just hard to handle overall.

Rival 8806-BL 6-Quart Oval Electric Ice Cream Maker, Blue Review

I just received this ice cream maker yesterday and made a batch of french vanilla ice cream. I ordered Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Dessert book at the same time I ordered the ice cream maker and they both came the same day. I used the French vanilla recipe from their book. The recipe is only for one quart so I quadrupled it. I used a lot more salt than the directions with the ice cream maker calls for to get the temperature down and also used a little table salt along with shaved ice. Use enough salt with the ice and you should have no trouble getting the temperature down. The ice cream was done when the motor stopped as per the directions. It only took 18 munutes from start to finish. The brine didn't even run out the drain hole in the can before the ice cream was done. The ice cream was pretty stiff consistency right away. We ate some for a taste test and put the whole can in the deep freeze for about an hour and the stuff set up very well. The ice cream was smooth and not gritty like it can be if it takes a long time to get done. After reading some of the reviews before buying this maker, I had some reservations about buying this particular model. I see now that they were unfounded. I had no problems with it at all. I would recommend this maker to anyone looking for a reasonably priced ice cream maker. Just be sure you use plenty of salt with the ice and be sure your ingredients are good and chilled when you put them together. By the way the recipe I used is excellent. Orka 4-Ice Pops Review

Orka 4-Ice Pops

I had bought some cheaper ice pop molds and it drove me crazy trying to remove the popsicle - warm water, banging them on the counter, having the stick come out without the pop. My two year old would lose interest by the time I got the thing out, half melted and dripping. I thought I'd give these a try, even though I was bit skeptical about the claims of how easy they were to remove. But low and behold, I grabbed that little tab and the silicon peeled right off, leaving a perfectly frozen, molded ice pop - as pretty as one I'd buy at the store. Great product.
