WindChaser Portable Ice Cube Maker Review

WindChaser Portable Ice Cube Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have mixed feelings about my Windchaser Ice maker. I purchased it new over the Internet and the first one arrived Dead on Arrival. It did not make ice. As Windchaser does not sell to the public, they were less than sympathetic when I called them informing me that the one-year warranty only applies to the original purchaser and instructed me to contact the seller. Thankfully my seller made good on the item.
The second one worked fine making ice as advertised. The ice cubes are hollow and resemble the bottom inch of a test tube if you can picture that. The unit makes 12 ice cubes in about 8 minutes. It's easy to use. Pour water in and turn it on. An LED display allows you to pick small medium or large cubes. I felt the small and medium were too thin but that's my opinion. The instructions tell you to replace any unused water within 24 hours. A small drain is provided.
Now let's get to what I don't like. The unit DOES NOT keep the ice cubes frozen once they are made. It's designed to make ice until the removable tray is filled. In other words once the ice making process fills the tray, the unit does not keep the ice frozen. The ice making process stops until you remove ice or a portion melts.
A sensor at the top of the tray detects the ice level. Once ice is removed or a portion sufficiently melts the ice making process starts up again. The water from the melted ice drips down into the water reservoir below and is reused. The unit is well insulated and well made for that matter so if not used immediately the ice melts similar to ice in a cooler.
To its credit the unit will make a full 2.5 pound tray of good ice in about 2 hours. If not used for several hours the result is a portion of the ice is semi melted, deformed and pitted. I didn't like that part.
I want to be clear in that once the melting ice triggers the sensor, the unit will make more ice and you will have a mixture of well-formed ice and semi melted ice. Not a perfect situation but I can live with it.
I also want to note that as you would expect the unit has a compressor and a cooling fan. While not especially loud it's far from silent during the ice making process. In my case I use the icemaker on my somewhat small houseboat so I hear it every time. Again not real loud but you know it when it starts up to make more ice.
I also want to note the machine does weigh 48 pounds. Not a real problem but you don't want to haul it all over creation. Also, the unit isn't real big however it does eat up some counter space. About the size of a big bread making machine.
My final note: Be careful to not tip the unit over when unpacking from the box. Like any refrigerator it's sensitive to being turned upside down. It's well packed and I found it almost impossible to remove from the box without tipping over. Might be easier if you had two people but I ended up cutting the box to get it out.
In conclusion I do have a nice icemaker that provides me with sufficient ice to offer a couple of friends a proper cocktail aboard my boat. I can live with the noise it makes. I just wished it kept the ice frozen longer.

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer Review

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer

Don't let the high price on this ice cream freezer fool you into thinking you're getting something that's high quality. We ordered one in late November, anticipating lots of fun "cranking" together at family get-togethers over the holidays. The "trial run" in early December went fine. But the second time we got the freezer out of the box -- on Christmas evening -- we saw that metal filings had shifted out of the crank mechanism. Then, as we attempted to make just our second batch of ice cream, the crank handle broke. (The crank mechanism seems to be poorly made, which overly stresses the crank handle.) Not what we expected from a $159 ice cream freezer.

This is a great freezer bowl for making soft serve! I bought an extra one because the key is that you just have to have it in the freezer for at least 24 hours to make sure it is totally frozen. It does not retain its coldness to make a second batch, and it isn't supposed to. It is fun being able to make soft serve ice cream at home.

Interesting product. Good idea. But for some strange reason these ice cubes melt quicker than ice cubes made in the "regular" ice cube trays. The "jewel" shape doesn't last very long either even with a beverage that's already chilled. Got a cheaper "shaped" ice cube tray at Ikea.

Lello 4080 Musso Lussino 1.5-Quart Ice Cream Maker, Stainless Review

Lello 4080 Musso Lussino 1.5-Quart Ice Cream Maker, Stainless
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this frozen dessert maker. I have used it at least once every night since it arrived 2 weeks ago. It's so simple to make a delicious frozen dessert with this machine, just mix up your ingredients (or you can just turn on the "churn" switch and have this machine mix it) and pour it in. 30-40 minutes later your dessert will be frozen to perfection.
The machine has a 60 minute timer which acts as a master on/off and two buttons, one to "churn" (mix) and the other to "chill". I often start it just before we begin our meal so we'll have a freshly made dessert when we're done.
This machine does an excellent job of making frozen desserts. We've made perfect fresh lime, cantaloupe and blueberry sorbets as well as delicious smooth and creamy ice creams like Mocha, Chocolate and Honeydew Melon. Because this machine is so easy to use, it allows you to be creative, often, and without the fuss of ice, salt or prefrozen bowls.
The 1-1/2 quart capacity is perfect for an average family, with some to spare, though for big parties you'd have to make more then one batch. Of course multiple batches are no problem with this machine and we've done 3-4 batches in a row more then a few times. Unfortunately since the bowl is not removable (the blades and cover are) you'll have to clean it out with a sponge and warm/soapy water between batches of different flavors.
You will need to have a permanent space for it since it is heavy and not the type of appliance you'd want to move in and out of a cabinet. This machine is really beautiful too with its stainless steel body/blade and eye appealing curves, it occupies a prominent spot in our home and has been a conversation piece. I consider it a practical "luxury" appliance.
This is a solid well built machine that should last a long time, my only concern is with the plastic cover, though it does seem sturdy enough. The plastic cover does however allow you to see your dessert while its being made, great for kids (and adults) anxious for dessert.
If you or your family loves frozen desserts, this is the machine for you. I've been looking at it for awhile now, I'm so glad I decided to buy it.

Watts 5YR Premier Filter 5-Year/20,000-Gallon Inline Ice Maker Water Filter
Average Reviews:

After a month of use to get it broken in I believe I can share my brief experience with this filter. First off, installation was really easy. Less than 30 minutes (don't forget to 'flush' it for five minutes). The water I had previously smelled and tasted like pool water. It seemed to have a more than acceptable amount of chlorine going by smell alone. As soon as I plugged this filter in instantly odorless tasteless water came out. Also, very recently some maintenance was done to the city pipes turning all the water in the house brown for a short while. Sinks, toilets, hose, everything that is except the fridge attached to this filter was clearly brown. Hands down side by side comparison this filter does an awesome job. If you want a better sense of security and want to remove the nasties that end up in your water get this filter.

Norpro 431 4-Piece Silicone Ice Pop Maker Set Review

Norpro 431 4-Piece Silicone Ice Pop Maker Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are pretty darn nifty spifty!!! I bought 2 packs so that I can make a total of 8 ice pops at a time. I just made my first batch and I will add and update if I have any more feedback on this item.
I used regular apple juice because it's summer now and I wanted a cool icy treat but something healthy...not something that is full of high fructose corn syrup. I will experiment with other things as time goes on...maybe make frozen yogurt pops like the other reviewer suggested.
To fill the "tubes" I used a smallish funnel and then stood all the pop tubes in a large clean yogurt container, so that they would stand up easily in the freezer in the yogurt container.
After eating my first frozen pop, I cleaned out the tube and the lid immediately and I wedged the lid into the tube. This will allow air to dry out the tub but should keep the lid from getting lost. I stood the tube upside down so that excess liquid could drain out. I think it could be pretty easy to lose the lid if you are not careful.
I definitely recommend these and expect to update my post if I have further ideas to share.

Maxi-Matic Elite Gourmet Old Fashioned Pine Bucket Electric/Manual Ice Cream Maker Review

Maxi-Matic Elite Gourmet Old Fashioned Pine Bucket Electric/Manual Ice Cream Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading all the reviews on all the ice cream makers I found one common theme; lots of one star reviews for a "cheap" product.
News flash, welcome to the world we live in. The lifestyle you get to live is because of economies of scale and mass production that we enjoy. The old days of 1923 White Mountain freezers are gone. Unless you want to spend $180-$200 on a "White Mountain" ice cream maker that is still getting bad reviews and is now owned by Rival, I would suggest just a few tweaks to make this machine great.
First, my barrel had a crack in it like other people have complained about. Instead of having to deal with sending it back, I bought some wood glue for $4 at a hardware store and bought 6 hose clamps ($2 each) and connected two of them to make them fit around the barrel for each of the 3 wire rings. I pulled off the 3 cheap wires (that are only for show) and put some glue in the crack and tightened the hose clamps then left them on to keep it tight.
Is it as pretty? Probably not as nice to look at as one fresh out the box. Does it do a bang up job for the price I was willing to pay? Yes.
The ice cream has come out fantastic and as long as you follow the directions, you should be just fine. I used the hand crank after the motor stopped and although the hand crank was made of cheap plastic, it still churned it for another 5-10 minutes. After I couldn't turn it, I stopped. I didn't keep forcing it until it broke (like other people who have written bad reviews) I just stopped. I know, weird...
So if you're like me and unwilling to spend $100+ dollars on a product that was probably manufactured in the same continent as this one, and you're willing to put a little sweat equity into your purchase? This is a great buy. I got what I paid for and tweaked it and it turned out just fine.

Mr. Coffee TM70 3-Quart Iced-Tea Maker Review

Mr. Coffee TM70 3-Quart Iced-Tea Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had an earlier Mr. Coffee Ice Tea Maker before this one and it was awesome. I loved it. The only problem was that it just got old from lots of use and the pitcher and tea bag holder started breaking. So I bought a new one for Christmas this year. This model. And it is absolutely horrible. The problem appears to be that as the tea is coming down out of the top of the unit and trying to drop into the pitcher, the unit starts acting up and the hot tea starts getting distributed onto the sides of the unit around the end of the pitcher, instead of falling directly into the end of the pitcher, and it leaks all over the counter. Horrible, horrible design. I do not understand how Mr. Coffee hasn't been sued over this piece of crap model yet from having it burn someone. I'm returning mine and I'll think twice about buying another Mr. Coffee model again.

Coffee drinkers have their automatic brewers, why shouldn't tea drinkers? Ideal for family gatherings or summer picnics, this versatile machine brews up 3 quarts of iced tea quickly and easily. Simply pour water into the water reservoir and add the desired amount of tea to the removable brew basket--five to seven bags of tea or 2 to 3 tablespoons of loose tea work well when brewing a full pitcher; sugar, lemon, and other flavorings can also be added to the brew basket for customized results. Then fill the pitcher with ice cubes to the ice-level marking and slide it against the machine with the pitcher spout open and flush against the appliance, and push the "on" button. The water heats up and steeps the tea in the brew basket, then hot tea drips down into the pitcher of ice. At the end of the brewing cycle, the machine shuts off automatically for safety and peace of mind. Other highlights include a power indicator light, a water window in the reservoir for accurate filling, and a steeping lever for adjusting the brew strength. The pitcher provides a lid, a generous handle, and a nondrip pouring spout for graceful serving, and it cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The iced-tea maker measures 8-1/2 by 15-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

White Mountain F69206-X 6-Quart Electric Ice Cream Freezer
Average Reviews:

I love this ice cream machine! It makes enough ice cream (6 quarts! not 1 to 1-1/2 quarts like the others) for large gatherings or enough to store for future consumption. It's very simple to operate with the electric motor doing all the work and the Ice Cream is fabulous, smooth and creamy. I put it on a "rag rug" on the kitchen floor where I add the ice/salt. It's a bit noisy, but it's part of the fun. My only complaint is that very few recipes are included with the machine. Solution, purchase a book of ice cream recipes to supplement. Some good ones are: Frozen Desserts : The Definitive Guide to Making Ice Creams, Ices, Sorbets, Gelati, and Other Frozen Delights which gives DETAILED history/information and The Ice Cream Machine Cookbook by Melissa Clark which includes some very creative ice cream combinations.

Chef's Choice 838 Waffle Cone Express Ice Cream Cone Maker Review

Chef's Choice 838 Waffle Cone Express Ice Cream Cone Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought a really great ice cream machine and I happened to be browsing the internet and I saw this waffle cone maker. At first, I thought, "O.K., not another gadget!" but after reading several descriptions of the machine I decided to buy it. Thank God for going with my first mind!! This machine is incredible. After reading the brief instructions, I mixed up my batch of waffle cone mix (Chef's Choice) and set out on my adventure. Spraying a small amount of olive oil onto the heating pads (I always spray oil for the first time of each use) I poured my first coaster-sized amount of mix onto the machine; closed the lid and waited for the appropriate time to elapse. After opening the lid, out came this good smelling circular cone. Immediately, I lifted the cone using a rubber spatula; used the cone roller as indicated and Viola!! A great cone!! Not to mention the wonderful smell permeating my house!!
It took me two tries to get the right amount of mix to make the perfect cone. I had some of the mix slide out the sides of the machine...no problem, just wipe it off. When making your cone fold a small amount at the bottom before you begin rolling the cone; or pinch the bottom of the cone when rolling so that your ice cream will not come out at the end; or put some melted chocolate, butterscotch or caramel at the bottom and let it get hard...a tasty plug!!
The only thing I can think of that would make this one package complete is if the company would supply a rubber spatula, the towel (they mention using) or perhaps a pair of cotton gloves to help roll the cone...it is hot!! However, I really use just my hands. I get a better feel of the roller this way. And, please do not let these couple of items dissuade you from purchasing this machine. That would be terrible. We should all, hopefully, have a rubber spatula and towels!!
Cleaning the machine is a breeze. The non-stick heating pads are greatly appreciated.
I highly recommend this machine. What a great addition to any household that loves ice cream!!
Be Blessed!!

Caution: Rave Review
Why can't I get decent chocolate chip ice cream? That's what I want to know. Chocolate chip, plain, unvarnished and perfect, is a rapidly vanishing breed in the highly segmented world of commercial premium ice cream.
The Donvier lets you create the fresh flavors you want, when you want them. So, I get my chocolate chip with rich veins of beautiful Ghiradelli's milk chocolate chips and just a few semi-sweet for the heck of it. My wife's favorite is fresh peach and that's what she gets. You know what - in season, it tastes very much like a beautifully ripe peach! Only better.
Freeze the container overnight. Dump in the ingredients. Pop the lid on. Stir. Wait a bit. Stir some more. Repeat for ... minutes or so. Yesterday, I made a quart of ice cream while I was in the midst of preparing dinner for six - it was just no problem. The ice cream got such rave reviews from our guests that I was troubled at how easy it was to make.
Chocolate chip TIP: Wait until it's partly frozen up before you dump in the chips - they don't all settle down to the bottom that way.
We've had our Donvier for almost ten years and have never had a problem. Hey, what could go wrong? it's a metal bowl with a plastic handle that you turn inside it. I suppose you could break the handle with an excess of joie de vivre, but they're pretty cheap to replace. Ah, you ask, but is it easy to use? Well, turning a crank in a bowl is a fundamental human activity - *anybody* can do it!
No more need you buy Ben & Jerry's chocolate chip peanut turbot ice cream at 3 bucks a pint or so. The Donvier makes it just too easy to make incredibly good, fresh ice cream yourself.
Buy one. Now. You won't regret it.

DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating Compressor Review

DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a manager of a kitchen retail store gives me a little edge because I can see a few of these machines in person. Our store carries the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker that has the prefreeze bowl, we also carry the Cuisinart self refrigerated unit, and the Delonghi gelato machine. We use the Cuisinart prefreeze models for our demo's we do
on Saturday's at the store. It works, but it's not the most impressive ice cream you've ever had.
I wanted something better. I looked at both of the other units I listed above. The Cuisinart unit didn't feel well made to me. I took out the bowl, etc and the arm that goes across the top of the machine to the bowl feels like it will be only a matter of time before that gets broke. I decided to try the Delonghi model.
I have used it several times now. I love it!! The first recipe I made was butter pecan ice cream. It was excellent and the machine had it ready in 30 minutes. It can take an extra ten minutes if you add alcohol to your recipe (and this recipe used Jack Daniels). The next recipe was chocolate hazelnut gelato. OMG...Yummy!
Everything we've made has been great. The machine is very simple to use and it works great. I'm very happy with my decision and hope this helps you if you're debating between machines. I would recommend this machine.
I've read that many people didn't like the Cuisinart unit because it's very loud when you use it.
This machine is not very loud. I would say that it's quieter than a blender running. I can still watch tv with it running without upping the volume. It's pretty easy to clean too. There is one area that can get crumbs when you add nuts, etc. I just wipe around in there with a moist q-tip and that's about the only "problem" I can find with this unit. I also purchased The Perfect Scoop book by David Lebovitz. Excellent recipes. Haven't found a dud yet and it also has great resources in the back of the book in regards to ordering ingredients, etc.
Hope this helps with your decision :)

Impress dinner guests with delicious, authentic gelato--like the kind found in an Italian gelato shop--thanks to this easy-to-use countertop appliance. The unit's mixing paddle effectively blends ingredients, from top to bottom, for smooth, delicious results, while its built-in self-refrigerating compressor brings ingredients to temperatures below freezing, which frozen-bowl ice-cream makers can't do. Its built-in compressor makes it possible to mix up multiple batches, one after the other, without having to wait to re-freeze the ice-cream bowl--a nice detail when making multiple batches during a family reunion or backyard barbecue. Furthermore, it uses an energy-efficient, eco-friendly refrigerant (non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive) that doesn't deplete the ozone layer like other refrigerants. The gelato maker also provides a transparent lid for keeping an eye on the mixing process, a removable stainless-steel bowl for easy serving and cleanup, and a recipe booklet with great-tasting ideas for getting started. When finished wowing friends and family, the bowl, lid, and paddle clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The gelato maker measures 12-4/5 by 15-4/5 by 9-3/5 inches.

Norpro Ice Pop Maker Review

This product is poorly designed. I am very sorry I bought it.
The metal top has slits of the precise dimensions of the popsicle sticks, but once the sticks are in liquid, they expand, of course, which makes them impossible to pull out of the lid!!!! The lid, in turn, contracts, squeezing the sticks even further, so to get them out, you have to strip the sticks through the metal holes. I am surprised that no leeway was built into this part of the product, and that the materials chosen, metal and wood, while nice and recyclable, were not more carefully evaluated for performance in changing temperatures. Perhaps the mold can be used without the lid, but then the sticks will fall over until the liquid freezes.
